Atlanta, GA – Georgians are headed back to the polls to choose between Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker for the state’s undecided Senate seat. The December 6 runoff election will be determined by voter mobilization efforts to energize the electorate and get people to the polls. Two activist voter organizations, Georgia STAND-UP and We Vote We Win, have been integral in establishing a robust ground game in Georgia, which will be crucial in who wins this race and shapes policy moving forward in a near evenly divided electorate.
“Moving into this runoff, we are laser-focused on educating voters and activating them to get to the polls between beginning November 28th, said Deborah Scott, CEO of the two organizations. “While our state continues to put barriers between the people of Georgia and their vote, we will mobilize voters to turn out and cast their ballots no matter what obstacles and inconveniences they may face.”
STAND-UP, a tax-exempt non-profit, conducts non-partisan voter education and registration campaigns. That work is complimented by We Vote We Win, which engages in issue advocacy, door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, and voter turnout strategies. The organizations are part of America Votes Georgia, an alliance of voting groups that promote progressive issues and causes. Leading up to the midterm elections, Scott’s orange-clad voting activists posted impressive numbers, knocking on more than a quarter million doors and reaching 450,000 voters through street canvassing that generated nearly 140,000 face-to-face conversations with individuals. In addition, they placed more than 1.7 million calls, had phone conversations with 47,000 voters, and sent out 175,000 text messages.
Targeting underserved communities and young people, Scott’s initiatives produced 66,000 conversations with Black women and 37,000 conversations with Black youth aged 18-35, during the midterm campaign – momentum they hope will carry into the runoff.
“It's all about base-building,” Scott said. “Right now, we are focused on the runoff, but we want voting to become a habit, a commitment among these constituents. Our focus is long-term, through the senate runoff, to 2024 and beyond. We are building a voter movement to carry Georgia into the future.”
